Make 2021 Your Best Year Yet
2020 was a doozy.
From quarantines, to shutdowns, to virtual school/work/everything – 2020 has caused a lot of changes. Many of the goals we had at the beginning of the year never materialized.
Which reminds me of this quote by boxer Mike Tyson:
Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
The truth is, 2020 punched us all in the mouth. And when it happened, all of our plans went out the window.
But 2020 also showed us how important our personal productivity systems are. Many of us (myself included) struggled to remain productive in the midst of a global pandemic.
James Clear explains why so may of us struggled this year in his phenomenal book, Atomic Habits, when he said:
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.
Systems are what you fall back on when things don’t go according to plan. They are your safety net – or should be, when working properly.
Personally, this year forced me to take a long, hard look at the systems in my own life. And in doing so, it became clear to me that there are 4 important parts in a solid personal productivity framework:
Get Clear about what you want to do and why it’s important.
Build Habits to automate the lifestyle practices and reduce the effort required to show up every day.
Make Time for your most important tasks (or MITs) by putting them on your calendar (so you you have time to actually complete them).
Take Action consistently to help you stay on track (and allow you to roll with the punches.)
These things make up the foundation for how to show up every day and give your attention to the things that matter – even in the middle of a global pandemic.
