Who are you and what do you do?

Patrick Rhone. Author, writer, and commentator. Best known for my work at Minimal Mac, the (now departed) Enough Podcast, and my personal site.

iPhone 5. Which is great.

What apps do you use the most, and why?

Well, DashPlus has quickly become my go-to capture tool. Launch, shake (which brings up a quick “Add to Inbox” field), type, enter, boom! Of course, I’m hardly unbiased.

Byword is how I do my writing. I write 95% of my blog posts on my iPhone so the app I use for that gets used a lot. I’m writing this on the iPhone in Byword right now.

I post directly from the phone to my personal site using Poster. It’s a shame it is no longer available to the public at large (purchased by the makers of WordPress).

Day One gets used a fair bit for personal writing and capturing of moments.

Reeder is my fave RSS reader.

Riposte and Twitterrific get used a fair amount too.

And, Mail.app and Messages.app several times a day. Those are my primary communication methods.

The truth is that I use my iPhone more than any other computer I own. And I’m very purposeful about what is on that main screen and in the dock. If something does not get used frequently, it has no place there.

Which app could you not live without?

Besides the built in ones, I could live without any of the rest. The truth is, the iPhone comes with all the basics out of the box. And they are all perfectly serviceable.

Seriously. I could use the built in calendar for my scheduling and the notes app for the writing/capturing stuff. I don’t need Twitter or App.net. All of this extra stuff is “nice to have” not “need to have.” We would all do better to remember that.
