Two fun facts…
Did you know Plan Your Year started on accident?
This is my wife, Anna. We live in Kansas City, but we’re both from Colorado.
Years ago — long before this selfie — we were in Colorado for the holidays, visiting family at Christmas-time.
I don’t remember the exact details, but I believe it was along the lines of this:
My family had plans to go out one evening (I think to see a play), but Anna and I had a newborn who would go to bed around 7pm.
So the 3 of us stayed back while everyone else went out. Once we finally got him to sleep, we had the house to ourselves.
I took some blank sheets of paper from my dad’s office, found a partially-opened bottle of wine in the kitchen, and we spent the evening talking about the upcoming year.
Anna and I had an amazing conversation talking about the short-term future. Things like what projects we wanted to do around the house. What trips we wanted to take. Our money goals. And more.
We were able to get on the same page about what was important to us.
And then, those few pieces of paper turned into our roadmap for the next year. And we finally accomplished some big goals we had always been talking about.
What began as an impromptu goal-setting date night thing, turned into an end-of-year tradition.
Then our friends started asking for copies of our questions.
Then, several years later, I made an ugly PDF and tried selling it online.
And from there it really took off.
Now it has pretty much become the most popular thing we do all year.
